Angi (formerly Angie’s List) (Home Services) While specific revenue numbers are not public, Angi leads the integration of scheduling, payment, and guarantee systems for home service providers and operates at massive scale in the home services directory space.

Thumbtack (Professional Services) Thumbtack’s primary revenue model is the lead fee, where providers pay a flat fee or percentage of the job value when they receive a new customer lead through the platform. The service sector is huge, with services contributing over three-quarters to the US GDP.

The most successful directories share key traits. The most profitable directories create multiple income streams including premium listings, featured placements, lead generation, advertising, affiliate commissions, and value-added services.

There’s a lot of ways they make money with a directory.

3. Hyper-Niche is the New Broad

Forget about Orange and Black. Here are some hyper-niche directories that are killing it:

Soorggon.com, a directory focused solely on hot springs in Oregon, attracts about 30,000 visitors monthly and generates approximately $767 per month from display ads. While modest, this shows even highly specialized directories can generate income.

Snowdaycalculator.com reaches 2.9 million visitors in peak winter months with projected earnings around $44,000 monthly, demonstrating how timing and clever marketing in a niche can create substantial revenue.

Reddit taught me there is a niche for anything - and they are a lot bigger than you may have thought. (Who would have thought there is a subreddit exclusively for badly made poutine? Because there is!)

When information is infinite, curation becomes the product. People are drowning in generic AI slop. They will pay for someone to cut through the noise and give them the specific, high-quality answer that solves their exact problem.

Stop trying to beat AI at volume. You’ll lose.

Beat AI at truth.

Build the thing that requires a human to verify. That’s your moat.
